When her father disappears, Isabelle Sterling inherits his half of a detective agency. However, it’s New York in the 1930s, and her father’s business partner Lionel Gilchrist is furious with the new situation.

 

With the agency's male employees refusing to work for a woman, Isabelle takes matters into her own hands. She hires a promising new investigator only to realize he has a suspicious past.

Arthur Dash isn’t giving Isabelle any hint of who he was before he walked through Isabelle’s door. He is one of the few who agrees to help Isabelle, however.

 

When she’s called by an old family friend to investigate the disappearance of a teenage girl in Vermont, Dash goes with Isabelle into the wilderness to find the missing girl.

But can Isabelle trust Dash? And under the menacing shadows of the of the pines, will he prove to be an ally? Or a killer sent by Lionel Gilchrist to end Isabelle’s claim to her father’s business for good.
